People Google a circle of unusual things . But while the anonymity of the internet sure helps them feel comfortable indulging sure inquiries , our curiosity as human beings did n’t commence with the innovation of the search railway locomotive .

" If we did n’t have the Internet the right way now , and you were looking to see out information on the migratory formula of blue birds , you could n’t just go to a computer and ask , " says Morgan Holzer , New York Public Library ’s Information Architect . " You had to find an encyclopedia , which were expensive , so you would go to your library . And if you were at the library and did n’t want to find an encyclopedia , there ’s a person stand aright there who you could just involve and who had been take aim to either give you an answer or tell you where to come up an answer . "

And sometimes those librarian in the general research division — who are responsible for field all sort of inquiries , either over the earphone or in person — write down the dubiousness they were asked .

" When they heard one they had n’t heard before , that was a little eldritch or a little funny , they might indite it down , " Holzer says . " Or if it was a hard one that they might have to ask someone after on or could n’t answer in good order away , they would write it down . " of late , the Library stumbled upon a corner of some of these old credit questions , with dates drift from the 1940s to 1983 ( and a special engrossment of questions from the ' 40s and ' 60s ) .

Some of the carte du jour include note on who was doing the asking : A dame who asked for " a al-Qur’an on Reincarnation that has illustrations … seemed projected that she could come in in and look at it . " Some include answers : What is the life of an eyelash ? 150 days . And some are n’t head at all : On January 20 , 1983 a proofreader approach the desk and say , " You ’ll have to forgive me , I ’m from New Jersey . "

But most just speak for themselves :
