SOLUTION To Sunday Puzzle #14: How Much Of Yourself Can You See In A Mirror?

https://gizmodo.com/how-much-of-yourself-can-you-see-in-a-mirror-1677380607

As many of you point out , such a setup does not technically allow you to see YOUR ENTIRE BODY . The rear one-half of your individual – not to mention your shoes – are not visible . While technically correct , this was not the reply I was wait for when I posed this puzzle . That being say , I will deliver that “ technically ” correct is my favorite sort of correct , so I ’m happy to award 5,000 arbitrary cyberspace points to the pedants , on this one .

Anyway . For the half - as - tall resolution to piece of work , a mirror half your top must be hang on a wall such that the top of the mirror is level with the halfway point between the top of your read/write head and your eyes . The logical thinking for this can be condense down to two points . Number one : To see any point on your consistence , light from that body part must bounce off the mirror and back to your middle . phone number two : When light reflects off a smooth surface ( such as that of a stock mirror ) , it does so at an slant equal to the slant at which it dispatch the surface . Behold , my redoubtable artistic abilities :

( I think I could sketch this out myself . In retrospect , I likely should have had our art section puff it up , but this should do in a nip . )

Note that when the mirror is hang as described above , it is potential to see your feet reflect back at you from the bottommost portion of the mirror . Note , also , that the amount of your body that is visible in the mirror remains constant , regardless of your propinquity to the mirror . go far off from the mirror will transfer the slant at which light arrives at and leaves the mirror ( note that angles A and B-complex vitamin are equal , but importantly lowly than the analogous angles C and D ) , but will not change the amount of yourself that is visible .

Some of you may find it utilitarian to retrieve of the mirror as a windowpane through which one peers ata non - superimposable , mirrored version of yourself . In the diagram above , the stick number on the far left represents the“virtual image”that is seeable to the stick figure in the middle . Because the mirror is perfectly flat , the virtual image is likely the same size as the middle stick figure . likewise , the virtual pin figure come out to be the same distance behind the mirror as the real , halfway stick image is in front of the mirror .

While potentially helpful , this crease of thinking can be confusing . I surmise it is why , conceptually , a lot of people think they can see less or more of themselves as they move closer or farther away from a mirror .

When you look through a material window , the amount of scenery you could see on the other side does appear to increase or decrease as you vary your distance from the window . you could seek this for yourself : Make a frame with your fingers and peer through it at arms length . Now bring the frame correctly up to one of your eye , and check as your field of view through your finger expand dramatically . [ Image viaShutterstock ]

Why does n’t this happen as you set about a mirror ? Well , it actually does . As you get close to a mirror , the amount of the practical world you see reflected back at you will seem to increase . likewise , as you back away , your window on the virtual world will appear to flinch . So why does n’t your view ofyourself change ? Because , unlike the virtual world , which remains fixed in place as you diverge your length from the mirror , your practical ego moves with you .

Let ’s go back to the window analogy . ideate you ’re standing face - to - face in an open field with a booster the same top as you . Between you stands a brick wall , and in its plaza is a window with a vertical porta equal to half your altitude . You step back , away from the opening . If your protagonist does not move , the extent of her body that you’re able to see will decrease as your window on the world beyond the rampart appears to shrink . If , however , your Quaker steps back from her side of the bulwark at the same pace that you step back from yours , your body will stay fully seeable to one another .
