lately last year , T - Mobile plunge aseemingly providential offering called Binge Onthat allows you to stream unlimited quantities of video using cellular information , for spare . Now , the Electronic Frontier Foundation has scrutinized the service and claims that its telecasting optimization is in fact “ just throttling . ”
Binge Onin theoryrecognizes telecasting streams and optimizes them to 480p — in theory detail enough to enjoy on a mobile earpiece , yet small enough not to eat up immense quantities of data . It work with service let in Netflix , HBO , Hulu , Sling TV , Watch ESPN , Vevo , and all kind of others .
Great ! Onlyin a blog post , EFF claims that T - Mobile is n’t really “ optimizing ” any of the video it serves . alternatively , from a series of tests carried out by the Foundation , it appears to simply trammel telecasting streams to around 1.5Mps . From EFF :

T - Mobile ’s video “ optimization ” does n’t actually castrate or enhance the video flow for manner of speaking to a wandering twist over a nomadic meshwork in any room . This have in mind T - Mobile ’s “ optimization ” consists entirely of throttling the TV stream ’s throughput down to 1.5Mbps . If the TV is more than 480p and the host sending the video does n’t have a way to cut down or adapt the bitrate of the video as it ’s being streamed , the result is stuttering and uneven cyclosis — exactly the opposite word of the experience T - Mobile take their “ optimization ” will have .
T - Mobile customers do get the option to turn Binge On , err , off . But , as EFF points out , “ it ’s pretty obvious that choke all traffic establish on app type definitely breach the principle of net neutrality . ”
The EFF goes as far as claiming that the FCC should investigate T - Mo ’s Binge On dodge . We ’ll have to wait and see if that happens .
