As much as Duncan Jones ’ Warcraft movie tries to be a close adaptation of the democratic plot serial , fans surely notice some massive , massive differences between the two . The paths of many democratic case change , stories pivoted in unexpected ways , and city literally shifted . To make sense of it all , we went to the director himself .
Why make any changes at all?
I mean , that ’s the bountiful question , correct ? You have a tarradiddle that ’s been well - defined by the squad at Blizzard , so why trouble deviate from it at all ? Here ’s Jones :
There ’s three different gene that would have an shock on making those kinds of changes . One of them would be , ‘ Are there already pre - existent pieces of traditional knowledge that dovetail joint and actually , over twenty age of storytelling , some thing fit perfectly and some of it is actually in complete struggle with itself . So what do we do in those spot ?
Secondly would be , as a filmmaker , we ’re trying to make a moving-picture show , which is a very unlike medium than a game , peculiarly when you have twenty years to tell your fib . Can I find ways to streamline things that keep the spirit and the DNA of the lore ? But at the same fourth dimension just makes it practical ? Because , it ’s not a game . And it ’s not The Iliad . Which you kind of have to if you ’re last to pop throwing surplus depth and explanation of who caused that , and then have to explain who that person is and who do that . You just kind of go down a hare fix .
So there ’s the reduction and the motive to streamline . Third , once in a while there ’s also the fact that it [ something ] would be cool . But there ’s not too many of those . I would say that most of the changes from the traditional knowledge really fit into those first two categories .
Why is Dalaran floating?
Dalaran is the home of magic in Azeroth ; it ’s function by a council of mages , and a metropolis plate to master and learner search and practicing the graphics of magic . Eventually in the world of the games , those mages — a camarilla call the Kirin Tor , whose allegory you see burned into Khadgar ’s sleeve in the picture — hover the city out of the ground with their power to safeguard it from attempt . But in Warcraft , Dalaran is already attend floating above in the sky . The reason ? consort to Jones , it just looks cooler that way .
[ We just conceive ] it would be cooler if Dalaran was floating then if it were on the ground . Back in my head I have retconned theme if we get to make more film on how to get back on lore data track . So , please read : I am aware and I do have a solution .
Why change the roles of Durotan and Garona?
In the Warcraft games , the portion of Durotan and Garona are very different . Durotan is mutilate alongside his wife Draka by Gul’dan ’s sentry go to get the meddlesome orc out of the agency . Garona ’s story is much more tragic ; mind - control by Gul’dan ’s dark magic , she is forced to turn on her human allies and assassinate King Llane in front of his own boy , an act that leaves the human land ripe for the pickings ( more on that in a scrap ) .
In the movie , those characters are render very different , but arguably more interesting , stories . Durotan battles Gul’dan one - on - one , and sacrifice himself so his people recognize his honest , evil nature . Garona still kills Llane , but it ’s at his request because he knows that ’s the only way she will be able to once again become a trusted member of the Horde , permit her to secretly reach for peace . They ’re huge changes , but Jones has his reason .
In the game , those character and their storyline are painted with pretty broad brushwood strokes . And I suppose when you ’re making a picture show , you have to work on at a different level of fidelity . And you have to add a little more definition and three - dimensionality to who these characters are , why they do what they do , and what they ’re thinking about when they ’re not yet doing what they are go to do ! And so I intend photographic film are unlike in that deference .
And for me , to enlist an audience , both of fans but also masses who are not fan , I need to make these theatrical role that people are go to care about . If Durotan is going to go up against the Horde , if he ’s going to go up against Gul’dan , why is he go to do that ? Why is he go bad to out himself and his family and his married woman and tyke in a position where they can be in peril ? All of that has to be explained , and it has to come out of the mouths of persona who you believe would do these things .
Why not end the film with the fall of Stormwind?
The game which Warcraft is base on , Orcs and Humans , ends on a much darker note than the movie : the homo lose , and they turn a loss badly . With Llane assassinate , the Orcs ravishment Stormwind City . Lothar evacuates the civilian as the Horde strip the metropolis and bite it to the ground . This action is the impulsion for the humans follow together with their Elven and Dwarven allies to form the Alliance .
In the film , this does n’t happen — Llane dies , but the Orcs do not attack Stormwind , leaving Llane ’s married woman Lady Taria and Lothar ready to protect the city from next attacks . Jones says Stormwind could still precipitate in a future movie , but the secret plan point was skipped simply because of everything the film was already strain to accomplish :
I kind of feel like we ’d bitten so much off with what we were trying to accomplish . We had to introduce all of these persona , introduce all of this humans to multitude who may not lie with anything about it . I think the fact that they start out the portal unsympathetic was enough . You know , whatever happens next will happen next . But that kind of feel like a pretty good chunk size . In two hour , we can get that done . Anything more , you ’re kind of escape into a convolution of epilogues and of story .
Why is Sargeras not in the movie?
The orphic wizard energy anticipate the Fel is a Brobdingnagian part of Warcraft , both the movie and the game . In the latter , we know it intend one affair : the demons of the Burning Legion , a huge , world - cross army of unholy monsters led by one of the biggest baddie in Warcraft traditional knowledge , Sargeras . In the original Warcraft , Sargeras was the entity that had possessed the Guardian , Medivh , for his whole lifetime , flim-flam him into work with Gul’dan . However , in the motion picture , Sargeras is n’t mentioned at all — but Jones does n’t think that means he does n’t survive .

We do n’t hump how he got it . I think there ’s enough of a looseness there that the being of Sargeras can still be within this retconning . And how much item we ever get into that ? You know , Sargeras originally being a shielder and being unspoiled and then him trying to set up the Orcs against Azeroth . Is that go to explain to me why Lothar is doing what he ’s doing ? It ’s too much .
But you have it away , it ’s all still there and it ’s all still possible . I would be thrill if we get the hazard to do a trilogy and perhaps there ’ll be a little bit more of that kind of ground stuff ? But I would rather say , “ This is where we ’re part . ” Maybe we ’ll be intimate a little chip more about the Fel , because I think that would be useful , but allow ’s move forward with the tarradiddle we ’ve got and start to deepen that out a bit .
Why didn’t Khadgar rapidly age?
At the close of Warcraft : Orcs and Humans , Khadgar ’s defeat of Medivh make him to suddenly and rapidly age to an old man ( which ishow he look in the World of Warcraft game ) . This does n’t materialize in the movie . As for why , Jones just referred back to his previous assertion ; if they get a chance to go more movies , this could be in there .
Did he always know Thrall would be the final image?
The last image of the film — namely Durotan and Draka ’s baby being blemish by mankind — has huge importance for anyone already familiar with the Warcraft dealership . That baby is Thrall , who eventually becomes one of the most prominent characters in the world of Warcraft , and the final shot of him was one of Jones ’ earliest ideas .
If we do have the fortune to do more motion picture … to me , this news report is about the Orcs turn a loss their home . And Durotan examine to get a Modern one for his mass . I would love , by the death of the trilogy , for us to make out where the raw Orc home is . And Thrall is obviously going to be massively important in that tale .
Who the hell was Glenn Close playing?
The heroes end up visiting a mysterious figure keep on at the pith of Dalaran in the picture show , played by Glenn Close , who reveals Medivh ’s treachery and offers portents of doom should they give out to barricade him . Even to diehard fans of Warcraft , her character is almost a perfect mystery — but she is , according to Jones , playing a graphic symbol name Alodi .
Now in the games , there ’s a male half - elf mage from the distant past with the same name . What other Warcraft story is Jones hoping to tell?
Jones is excited that he catch to set the table for a larger Warcraft universe and though he desire to come back for a subsequence if it pass , he also would love to see another aspect of that world explored . Specifically , he want to see the events of Warcraft III , featuring the ascension and fall of a human paladin name Arthas into one of Warcraft ’s most iconic villain , the Lich King .
I would love to see Lich King . You fuck , I would love to see these other things . I would love to see someone else recount those narrative so that I could watch them as a fan .
What’s the status of the sequel?
Chris Benson and I have discussed in very loose term what the trilogy will be . We all require to slack after this film . It took three - and - a - one-half years . And we ’ll kind of get back into it if people like this picture show enough to justify us having the chance to make a few more .
The interesting thing is going to be the stress we spend on specific characters that may not be the same emphasis that ’s in the biz . But again , that kind of gives us a little bit more flexibleness and freedom to see things from perspective that follows the same traditional knowledge , but see it from a very unlike linear perspective than you saw it in the game .
Warcraft is now in theaters . And it’sdoing really well in a few of them .
