We ’ve got a farsighted wait until Game of Thrones comes back , and there are a lot of situations we ’re going to be freaking out about until then . Ser Davos Seaworth is in the midsection of about three of them . So when we catch up with actor Liam Cunningham , we had a muckle of questions for him . And he had answers !
Spoilers for Game of Thrones ’ recent episodes ahead …
Mostly , we were just really curious to find out Cunningham ’s thoughts about Ser Davos ’ state of mind , and what the Onion Knight might be nonresistant to do now that everything has descend apart . We speak to Cunningham at the Entertainment Weekly political party at San Diego Comic - Con on Saturday nighttime , and there are a mess more interviews from that event coming up .

To refresh your remembering , here are the messes that Davos is surrounded by . His liegeman lord , King Stannis , is apparently all in , and Stannis ’ army is destruct or deserted . Meanwhile , Davos is back at Castle Black , where they just let a ton of Wildlings come into Westeros through the Wall . He ’s up there with the Lady Melisandre , the strange priestess who manifestly just realise her organized religion in Stannis was misplaced . And of class , the Lord Commander Jon Snow was just stabbed , apparently fatally . And there ’s that United States Army of C zombies . Interesting times .
you’re able to watch over the video above for our whole conversation with Cunningham , but here are the major full point .
Davos left Stannis ’ side , to go back to Castle Black — but did he know that Stannis would burn the Princess Shireen alive as before long as he was go ? “ He probably used his distaff intuition , ” responds Cunningham . “ That ’s why he try out to take Selyse and Shireen with him … but what could he do ? He tried three or four times to say , ‘ I need take them with me , or permit me just take the princess . ’ So he know that something is up — he ’s obviously flummox a sentiency of that . ”

But “ there ’s very little you’re able to do ” in the face of Stannis ’ recalcitrance . “ He ’s my boss , or he was . ” Having a shot where Davos tells Stannis , “ Do n’t burn your daughter ” would have just been “ brassy dramatic play , ” Cunningham says .
And if Davos had in reality make out that Shireen would get burned live , “ he would n’t have gone , ” insist Cunningham . “ He had a signified that something was n’t right . But if he ’d make out that something like that was go to materialize , no way . He would have whisked her off . He would have done what he did with Gendry , without a question — perchance not put her in a gravy holder . ”
And now , Ser Davos can never have it out with Stannis . “ Life is like that , ” says Cunningham . “ you’re able to have a big battle with somebody who ’s near and heartfelt to you , and they can get hit by a car the next daylight . The show is a reflection of life in all its complexity . It ’s not a simple show . I retrieve that ’s why people like it so much . It does n’t do the obvious . ”

But will Davos have it out with Melisandre ? “ I do n’t know . You would calculate , ” says Cunningham . “ you may try and speculate . However , they have this unearthly need for each other , in a unusual sort of way … She did save his life when Stannis want to kill him . ”
So now , Davos is in a high-risk spot—”Castle Black is on its brain now , ” pronounce Cunningham , follow Jon Snow ’s blackwash . He was “ attempt to get away from trouble . All he seems to recover is trouble . ”
The good news is , Ser Davos is probably the most level - headed person left alive at Castle Black at this power point . “ There ’s not many [ left ] , is there ? ” express joy Cunningham . “ His powers of lateral mentation are very estimable , ” say Cunningham of Davos .

Davos has lost everyone and everything he cared about at this item — but “ we all battle through , ” allege Cunningham . “ He ’s not a guy cable that gives up easily . ” At the same clip , Cunningham has n’t read the script for season six yet .
Is Davos somebody who needs to be a follower , or could he step up and become a leader , when he finds himself in the midriff of a leadership void ? “ He does n’t have the imbecility to want to be a loss leader , ” tell Cunningham . “ He ’s much too level - headed . He ’s not ambitious . ”
“ He ’s definitely a great second gear in command , but I do n’t think ” Davos is leaders material , adds Cunningham . “ Then again , some the great unwashed get greatness thrust upon him . peradventure that ’ll happen . ”

Did Davos welcome the fact that Stannis shorten off his fingers ( for smuggling ) out of Stockholm Syndrome , or a pauperization to believe in someone else , no matter what ? “ It was n’t so much that . He had a grudging esteem for the silver dollar of it . As Stannis did with him . They had sort of similar flavour about the justice , or whatever you ’d require to call it , of penalise him for his misdeed . [ Stannis had ] also take him out of the trough , given him a solid education , and given him a much good life-time . So it ’s that unearthly complexness thing , again , that I care so much in the show . ”
