Last night , Sanctuary treated us to a bizarre blend of two bad fabrication favorite : vampires and Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla . We detect out what bloodsuckers can do with an encyclopaedic understanding of electricity , but the installment ’s biggest reveals are about the major characters . We learn how Helen Magnus became immortal , Ashley learns the truth about her father , and Will check why Henry lives in the Sanctuary .
After last week ’s Nubbin encroachment , this sequence proved a welcome breakage from the CGI - overburden . We spread out with Helen Magnus in Rome , turn in a talking to on abnormals . Once she is finished , she ’s ambushed by Nikola Tesla , who look as young as Helen does and greets her with a candy kiss . Warning her that the Cabal ( the rival abnormal tracker from the second sequence ) is on her tail , he drag her into the construction ’s ( computer generated ) catacombs , where she pass most of the installment running from the Cabal ’s gunmen and enduring Tesla ’s incessant chatter .
Meanwhile , John Druitt re-emerge to do what he does best : kidnapping Ashley . Despite handcuffing the blond freak hunter to a chair , Druitt appears rehabilitated , telling Ashley that her mother is in trouble and that he needs to know where Helen is so he can rescue her . Ashley , who was already fooled by Druitt once this season , is n’t having any of it , so Druitt essay to acquire her over , with surprisingly trivial urgency , by telling her about his past with Helen .
Between Tesla and Druitt , we learn that Helen , Druitt , and Tesla were all part of a scientific inquiry group jazz as “ The Five . ” In a particularly mad scientist moment , Helen manages to make pure a serum from the blood of vampires , a long - nonextant race of abnormals , and the Five throw in themselves with it . As a final result , Helen became immortal , Druitt became a fourth dimension - move around , teleporting maniac , and Tesla became a bona fide lamia . And , as an added fillip , Tesla wants to quicken that noble wash and decree over all humanity .
The show ’s B complex - plot center on Will , Bigfoot , and Henry , who have been left behind to hold down the fort . Naturally , some abnormal is loose in the Sanctuary and has started mess with the wiring and assail the resident . Since every single clew points a big Ne pointer at Henry , who has come down with some mystic fever , Will suspects that the Sanctuary ’s technician is the culprit . When the actual monster ( some random lizard that inexplicably sleep with to forefend the cameras and turn off the motion sensor ) appear and attacks Will , Henry saves the day and reveal himself as some sort of werewolfish abnormal , although I opine the biggest surprise about Henry is that the gallant has a lot of body piercings .
There were little choice morsel in this sequence that I ’d wish to see more of throughout Sanctuary . Helen notes that the likes of Caesar and Alexander the Great were really vampires who held manhood beneath their thumbs , suggesting a whole alternate story of the mankind based around abnormals . We saw some of this originally with the “ Fata Morgana ” instalment , and I hope the writer are capable to interweave these strands into a rich and cohesive macrocosm . Tesla ’s ability to make vampire from dead body using his own rip and an electric electric charge was also a nice and unexpected blending of scientific discipline and myth , and helped cut back the randomness of making Tesla a lamia in the first situation .
I had mixed flavour about Druitt ’s return to saneness . Although it was weirdly plausible that Tesla ’s electroconvulsive therapy overrefinement would reboot Druitt ’s brain , psychotic Druitt made for an interesting villain . Still , since he is n’t laying off the insanity - causing teleportation , I suspect we ’ll see deadly Druitt again , and Helena and Ashley will likely face the dilemma of whether to destroy him or attempt to bring around him again .
Tesla , with his amoral tendencies and his obnoxious attempts at charm , could also make a comeback as either ally or antagonist . Although I do n’t believe the writer did enough with him this episode ( I determine myself want the episode to cease with him in an amazing lab conducting frightful experiments on his lamia creation ) , he own a stronger personality than many of the show ’s main characters ( read : Will ) and actually make out to raise an emotional response from the usually cool Helen .
But Sanctuary continues to suffer from a deficiency of duplicate , and almost every scene has too much space and too few citizenry to fill it . I got momently excited when Will evoke interview some of the abnormals , hop for a stream of abbreviated , singular , and weird interactions between Will and the Sanctuary ’s residents , but those Hope were quick dashed . Maybe now that the Sci Fi Channel has picked up Sanctuary for another season , they can charter a few actors and composition artists to populate it .
