Lake - effect snow happens when cold airwave pass on over the warm waters of a lake , causing some lake urine to evaporate into the atmosphere and warm it . This warm , wet melodic phrase rises , and then cools as it gets further aside from the lake . During this cool process , the moisture is resign , and if it ’s cold enough , it turn into Charles Percy Snow . And as residents who last east of these giant lakes can attest , it can result in wondrous sum of snow .
