Someone is trying to make “ The Snappening ” happen .
Whether they ’re trying to make it happen as a bare photo dump or as a dupery is unclear .
Named after the recent nude famous person leak , rumors are circulating that hackers have make access to stolen Snapchat photos and project to mate the sexually explicit ones up with usernames and release them in a deluge on October 12 .
harmonise to Business Insider , the hackers gain accession to a 13 GB depository library of child’s play from a third - company web site that people used to economise Snapchat photos without the sender knowing . The leaks did not get along from Snapchat ’s servers .
Snapchat acknowledged the leak but abdicate responsibility .
“ We can confirm that Snapchat ’s servers were never transgress and were not the source of these leak . But that ’s a big if . Snapchat might not have anything to apologize for at all this time around ( besides giving potentially violated user some COLD ASS intervention ) .
Business Insider identified the clientele behind the leakage as a website called SnapSaved , which is no longer operative . The New York Timesinvestigated SnapSavedand hear whoever ran it has obscured their identity operator . Ars Technica noted that Snapchat ’s APIhas been reverse - engineeredin the past , which SnapSaved could have used to obtain Snapchat photograph … but there ’s no evidence that this happened .
SnapSave , a more well - known third party app , has adamantly denied being involve . “ ” Our app had nothing to do with it and we ’ve never log username / watchword , ” SnapSave repp Georgie Casietold Engadget , adding that SnapSave does n’t melt on a swarm . Casey emphasized to Gizmodo that his app has “ nothing to do ” with this alleged wetting .
Motherboarddownloaded a torrentallegedly contain some of the leaks . “ It does appear that at least some snaps were hacked from somewhere , by someone , ” Jason Koebler wrote , note that most of the image were non - pornographic . Comforting if this is existent , but in spades not substantiation that it is .
This could be a dupe to implicate 4Chan , like when a group of hoaxers made it look like 4Chanwas threateningto leakage naked photographs of Emma Watson . One of the first blogs to publicize this story is run by Kenny Withers , a social media marketer who posted some of the allegedly leaked photos . Some peopleare arguingthat the supposedly leak photograph are motion picture that have been online for a long prison term and are not from Snapchat at all .

If the leak is substantial , though , there is likely an ample amount of child pornography there ( Snapchat ’s userbase skew to a great extent underage ) . And it is a Brobdingnagian sight , and the hackers should go to gaol . However , properly now there ’s no validation that these photograph actually came from a hack . They could easily be photos from elsewhere online .
Whether or not this is real or Irish bull , it’sa effective reminderthat Snapchat has apretty shitty recordat keeping user information secure and it is not the idealistic platform for sending or receiving sexually explicit pictures .
