Philips has secretly been working on a novel storage format that uses a Blu - Ray optical maser to put in 4 GB of information on a 3 cm rewriteable disc . They unveiled the new microdisc in Japan last calendar week . Until Philips merchandising section comes up with a snappy name , it ’s hump as Small Form Factor Optical . Should be quick for sales event within two years .
