With Star Wars Episode I hitting theater all over again , there ’s been a whole newfangled wave of interest in George Lucas ’ biggest letdown . And we ’ve been remembering some of the other prequels that have hear to take in backstory over the years .
Prequelsgenerallysuck , but they do n’t have to be as bad as Phantom Menace . Here are 10 scientific discipline fable prequels that were better than Jar - Jar ’s debut , outrank from right to worst .

grant to the Oxford English Dictionary , the Holy Writ “ prequel ” was actually invented for science fiction by Anthony Boucher , write in the Magazine Of Fantasy & Science Fiction in 1958 . But prequels have become ever more common in recent years . bill : This list does n’t admit reboots , like climb of the Planet of the Apes or Batman Begins .
So … depart with least sucky , and work our room up to suckiest , here are 10 scientific discipline fable prequels that are already out there :

10 ) Prelude To Foundation by Isaac Asimov . One of Asimov ’s later Foundation books was in reality a overture , recount the report of Hari Seldon ’s early years . And Seldon turns out to have hung out with R. Daneel Olivaw , who ’s operating under the name Demerzel . By all accounts , it ’s pretty worthwhile summation to the saga , althoughthis hombre says“the characters seem unusually shallow , even for Asimov , ” and mayhap we did n’t need to acknowledge that much about Seldon ’s early life .
9 ) Caprica . This show was at its good when it was blazing its own trail , exploring stuff like virtual - reality murder games and the eldritch relationships between gangster , estimator eccentric person and religious zealots . When the show tried to tie up loose ends from Battlestar Galactica , or link in immediately to Cylon mythology , that ’s usually when it tended to stumble .
- Cube Zero .

Actually , this was sort of a fun approach to explaining the enigma of the first Cube — and not nearly as pointless as Cube 2 . It ’s sure moot whether we want an account of the Cube , and a prospect of it from the POV of the the great unwashed function it , but at least this was a thought - provoking enlargement of the universe . It did take things in a somewhat more zany direction though .
7 ) When The Tripods Came by John Christopher . Did we really need to know how the foreign Masters curb humanity ? The original tripod trilogy starts out with human race already conquered , and then fill in the details of how it hap . But generator Brian Aldiss insisted it was n’t credible these alien could have conquered twentieth century homo , with our awesome technology . So Christopher went back and wrote a prequel , explaining how the Masters took us over using creative thinker control via a video show called The Trippy Show . Not really an substantive addition , and it somewhat dilutes the awesomeness of starting with manhood already crush .
6 ) Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom . Not nigh as risky as Crystal Skull , but not nearly as good as Lost Ark , this picture show is actually the early cinematic Jones tarradiddle , despite come out after Raiders . It has a few highlight , like the early poisoning succession , the subterranean train pursual and the gun / tongue conflict . But it ’s mostly cheesy and dull where Raiders was sharp and fun .

5 ) The Thing Wegenerally kinda likedthis prequel to John Carpenter ’s The affair — but there were a few huge problem , including the fact that the Thing kept want to torture people alternatively of just killing them and replicating . And the special effects were gravely uneven , to put it mildly . Most of all , the slap-up failing at the heart of this young matter … was the affair itself . And that was spring to make fans of Carpenter ’s original classic sad .

4 ) ten - Men Origins : Wolverine

We almost include X - Men : First Class on this leaning , but First Class was almost a reboot rather than a prequel — you ’d have to go to a fate of effort to make it connect up with the Singer / Ratner X - Men trilogy . Meanwhile , Wolverine is intelligibly a prequel to the X - Men films , even down to the Patrick Stewart cameo . And gah , what a heap . It does differentiate us how Wolverine get his Adamantium skeletal system and claw and stuff , but deal to make Logan a less interesting lineament in the process . But it also commits one of the crucial sin of prequels : packing in too much superfluous garbage , like trying to show us a young Scott Summers , and a long ton of mutant cameos . One version also would have had a young Storm . Even the Patrick Stewart cameo seems to be there to sample and marry the series together , rather than as a storytelling point . And then there ’s the amnesia - inducing bullet … sigh .
3 ) The Dune Prequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson . Frank Herbert write six Dune books . And since his death , his Word and Anderson have written 10,000 books , mostly set before the original novels . They include Lost Lunch Menu Of Dune and We Were Going To Have A Jihad But Then We Found That Lunch Menu And adjudicate To Get Lunch rather , Of Dune . Just break out David Louis Edelman ’s reviewof the prequels , in which he calls them out for purposeless unpleasantness , turning Baron Harkkonen into a cartoon , and making “ a much - take and richly detailed universe of discourse a belittled place . ”
2 ) The Aliens Vs . marauder film . These are essentially prequels to the original Alien films , since they take station on present - daylight Earth , before humans have spread out across the stars . And if Aliens Vs Predator : Requiem had been a collision , the directors plan a third AVP cinema which would have linked the serial publication to Alien straightaway . Thank goodness for lowly mercies . The first AVP film is unpointed , if fun . The second one ? My . Head . scathe . I watched it sober , and still have no mind what was going on , peculiarly with the Turducken - same PredAlien hybrid .

1 ) Star Trek : endeavour . J.J. Abrams ’ Star Trek motion-picture show started out with a huge advantage : It could n’t perchance be as annoying as this look at the “ original ” Enterprise , with constant sequences of underwear - clad decontamination and people ’s arms flummox pregnant . I still do n’t sympathize what the “ temporal stale war ” was about ( why was it a cold-blooded warfare ? ) and who that shadowy figure was . And later episode spent right smart too long yield us the origin of Khan , the Klingon head - bumps , and Vulcan pacifism . Even the producer intend the show was so dull , it would be better to end it with Riker and Troi bet wearing apparel - up .
